My Son Asks

As I was tucking Seth in for the night, my 7-year-old son turns to me and asks: "Dad, why does anything have to exist?"
I tell him that is a very good question. One of the most important questions anyone can ask or anyone has asked in the whole world, ever.
He asks, "Do you know the answer?"
I say, "No. I don't know the answer."
Then, "Does Jesus know the answer?"
I say, "Yes. Jesus knows the answer."

Leaving this thread of thinking, he asks, "How did the world begin?"
And I tell him, "People have many theories about how the world started."
He asks, "What's a theory? A story of how it happened?"
I say, "Yes. It's somebody's idea of how something happened or works."
He goes on to surprise me by saying, "Like the big explosion?"
I answer, "Yeah, it's called the Big Bang Theory. Some people think that everything, all the planets and the sun and all the stars in the universe started from one point, and then they exploded out."
He says, "How do they know that things exploded?"
I say, "Scientist say that the universe is moving out...all the planets and stars are moving away from each other, and if you draw lines back to where they came from....you see that they all came from one place. And other people say that Jesus created the world just as we see it today."

Satisfied with this we begin our nightly routines. I kiss him, he gives me a kiss and falls off to sleep with no worries to keep him awake.
